CUMMING — Elementary students from across Forsyth County are invited to take part in a longstanding tradition this weekend.

From 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, the 35th Annual Optimist Track Competition will be held at Forsyth Central High School’s stadium.

The event is free for any student in kindergarten through fifth grade and includes a T-shirt, participation ribbon and lunch.

Food and beverages for family members and other spectators will also be available for purchase.

Students can enter to compete for ribbons and bragging rights in a variety of track and field events, including 50- and 100-meter dashes, 100- and 200-meter distance runs, softball throw and standing long jump.

Four-person relay races will also be held at the end of the meet for all second- through fifth-graders who wish to participate.

A “spirit trophy” will go to the elementary school with the most students attending.

Students who attend private schools or are homeschooled are also welcome to take part.

Registration will open at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, although anyone interested in attending can also sign up in advance at and clicking the “events” tab.
