A 30-year-old Hoschton man died a day after his son after both of them were pulled from Lake Lanier near Margaritaville Thursday, July 11.

Georgia Department of Natural Resources spokesman Mark McKinnon said the child, Ethan Chen, was declared dead at 1:58 p.m. Wednesday, July 17, at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. The father was still in critical condition Wednesday.

DNR officials told The Times the father, Libao Chen, died Thursday, July 18.

Hall County Fire Services Capt. Zachary Brackett wrote July 11 that, “The father noticed that the son had not surfaced and went into the lake to find him. He then went under water. Life guards and/or bystanders located the juvenile and started rendering aid. The father was then located and removed from the water and (given) aid.”

The boy was later flown to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources is handling the investigation.
