Hall County Fire Chief David Kimbrell said a fire burning on a 10-acre island in the middle of Lake Lanier will be allowed to burn itself out.

Fire crews were dispatched to the island and found it about 50 percent involved in flames. The Army Corps of Engineers and Department of Natural Resources have been notified, Kimbrell said.

The fire is contained to the island with no exposure, and wind is not a factor, Kimbrell said.

"We do not have fire extinguishing capability on the lake," Kimbrell wrote in an email, adding that the closest access by road is Twin Rivers Drive off Browns Bridge Road, just west of Gainesville.

The cause of the fire is unknown and will be investigated, he said.
