The cause of a Monday morning blaze that destroyed an abandoned home in south Forsyth remains under investigation.
The structure on Hilltop Circle was engulfed in flames when Forsyth County firefighters arrived, Fire Capt. Jason Shivers said.
“It had already begun to fall in on itself when we arrived on scene,” he said.
A passing motorist reported seeing flames about 4 a.m. from Old Atlanta Road, Shivers said.
The fire hampered the morning commute, as Old Atlanta was closed for a short time and then reduced to one lane until about 9 a.m., he said.
“We converted to the use of tankers early in the operation, as soon as we could, to open up the roadway as soon as possible,” Shivers said. “It was a challenge just to access the location.”
The fire was contained to the structure and some brush around the former home.
“There was no power to the home and there [was] no one there,” he said. “It was an abandoned, unlivable building.”
