A 5-year-old girl died early Wednesday, hours after she was pulled from a community pool in her south Forsyth neighborhood.

The incident occurred about 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Avington subdivision off Mathis Airport Parkway.

The girl, whose name has not been released, was taken by ambulance to Emory Johns Creek Hospital and then flown to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Pediatric Hospital.

Forsyth County Coroner Lauren McDonald confirmed the child died about 12:45 a.m. He said her body has been sent to the state medical examiner for an autopsy.

Forsyth County Sheriff’s Capt. Frank Huggins said the child was in the care of a 35-year-old babysitter, whose name he declined to release.

The sitter went to get the child’s clothes and asked her sister, also 35, to watch the girl, Huggins said.

“When she returned about 10 minutes later the child was at the bottom of the pool,” he said.

A nurse who was at the pool began CPR after the child was out of the water. Fire and emergency medical personnel arrived and began treating the girl.

No charges have been filed. Huggins said the investigation continues.
