Organizers say a golf tournament will honor the memory of a long-time Atlanta Braves’ announcer.
The inaugural Ernie Johnson Memorial Golf Tournament will be held Monday at Polo Golf & Country Club, with all proceeds going to the American Cancer Society.
Johnson lived in the subdivision before dying of congestive heart failure in 2011 at age 87, said neighbor Joe Morabit, one of the tournament organizers.
“We wanted to hold this tournament in his memory,” Morabit said.
Morabit said he’s expecting about 100 golfers, but “we can always use more.”
Cost is $125 per player, and those wishing to participate should let Morabit know by Saturday.
The tournament will begin with registration from 9-10 a.m.
“We’ll have a ceremony at 10:30 and the shotgun start at 11,” Morabit said. “At 5, we’ll have a dinner with a silent and live auction.”
For those not interested in playing, supporters can join the dinner for $30 per person if registered by Saturday.
Morabit said Johnson’s wife, Lois, still lives in the neighborhood.
“I know his wife is elated about the tournament and Ernie Johnson Jr., who’s also a Braves’ announcer and an NBA announcer, he’s just overwhelmed,” Morabit said.
The younger Johnson, who broadcasts golf for ESPN and is a co-host on TBS’ NBA pre-game show, will be in attendance.
