A head-on collision between a sport utility vehicle and van on Canton Highway left two people in critical condition Friday afternoon, authorities said.

The wreck occurred about 2 p.m. near Business Drive, west of Cumming, said Fire Div. Chief Jason Shivers. Both drivers were trapped in their vehicles.

Forsyth County Sheriff’s Investigator David Garrison said a Honda Pilot, driven by a 75-year-old Big Canoe woman, was traveling west on Hwy. 20 when it crossed over the centerline and struck the eastbound van.

Garrison said the 61-year-old Canton man driving the Ford F350 van “tried to stop, but could not avoid the collision.”

Both drivers were traveling alone and no other vehicles were involved.

According to Shivers, the woman was flown to Atlanta Medical Center, while the man was taken by ambulance to North Fulton Hospital.

It took emergency personnel about 20 minutes to free the drivers from the vehicles, he said.

The busy highway was closed in both directions for about an hour.

According to the sheriff’s office, no charges have been filed at this point.
