CUMMING — The 11thannual Jay Cullen Memorial 5K is set for 8:30 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Cumming.
“The things that [Cullen] stood for are something we feel like the race represents,” said Scott Carpenter, organizer. “It represents faith and it represents taking care of the gift that God gave you and that means a lot to us.”
An avid runner and cyclist, Cullen was organizing the first race, but died before it was held after being struck by a car while bicycling in north Georgia.
The church on Sawnee Drive has continued the race in Cullen’s honor, raising money for its youth missions, which this year will travel to Savannah and Malaysia.
Carpenter said the 11 students going on the Malaysia mission must raise $3,000 each for the trip. The $5,000 or so generated by the race will be evenly distributed among them.
“They will be working the race or running the race, so it lets them help raise their own money a little bit,” Carpenter said. “It’s not just someone sending them or someone handing them money.
“A lot of them are babysitting and sacrificing other things, and that’s what being on a mission is. That we give up something in order to give people what God has blessed us with.”
Carpenter said he expects as many as 300 people to take part in the race, with better weather perhaps encouraging more participants.
