CUMMING — A race that brings awareness to a health issue affecting many male runners will set out from the Cumming Fairgrounds on Saturday.

The sixth annual Fast PACE Race — featuring a 5K, 10K, 15K, 1-mile run/walk and 3,200-meter middle school run — will begin at 8 a.m. The event aims to bring awareness to prostate cancer, which its website said is the most common major cancer in American men.

Devin Forsyth and the Forsyth Area Striders Team, or FAST, bring a celebrity runner to the race every year.

Frank Shorter, a former American long-distance runner who took home a gold medal in the marathon at the 1972 Summer Olympics, spoke at a pre-race pasta dinner Thursday night.

Shorter is the only American athlete to win two medals in the Olympic marathon event. Prostate cancer hit home when his coach passed away from the disease.

Free prostate cancer screenings will be offered during post-race activities at the fairgrounds.
