Like the animals once lined up to board Noah’s ark, Forsyth County animals will assemble on Sunday for a blessing.
The North Forsyth United Methodist Church is offering a blessing of the animals at its Pets & Pasta Day starting at 5 p.m. Sunday.
The pets will line up in the aisle for a blessing following a short worship service, much like the congregation does for communion, said church member Tracey Small.
Each animal will be blessed with holy water and a prayer for a long and healthy life, she said.
“Of course you love your pets and you would do anything for them,” Small said. “It’s just a way to have a family event … you can not only bring your kids but you can bring your four-legged kids.”
She pointed to several references in Bible where animals have helped humans, and when God saved the animals from the flood by having Noah build the ark.
“They’re very much biblical beings,” she said, “so we thought we’d have a blessing of the pets.”
Small said the new church likes to hold community events to bring awareness to their services.
Many of the congregation’s members have pets, including the preacher, who has a farm of fainting goats, she said, so an animal event seemed like a good fit.
Small expects dogs, cats, birds, a lizard and maybe even a horse to attend.
Animals must be caged to enter the sanctuary, though, so larger pets like a horse will be blessed outside.
The event will also feature local pet-related businesses with booths set up and a free pasta dinner in the fellowship hall.
