A food and wine fundraiser will benefit a local church.
Members of Saints Raphael, Nicholas & Irene Greek Orthodox Church will hold the first Cumming Food & Wine Festival from 5 to 8 p.m. May 5 at Polo Golf and Country Club.
Julie Chokos, chairwoman of the festival committee, said proceeds from the event will go toward a new multipurpose building at the church.
“That will serve as a recreational building for our youth, a community center for the entire Cumming and Forsyth County community, and will also house Sunday school classes and church offices,” she said.
“Because the community is growing faster than we can keep up with, our long-term goal is to eventually have a new church building.”
Tickets to the event are $35 and will include wine pairings with food from nine area restaurants, Chokos said.
“We have over 30 different wines [from] different stores and distributors that we will be pairing with dishes from the restaurants,” she said.
Some of the cuisines to be offered include Italian, Greek and barbecue. There will also be a range of sweet treats paired with dessert wines, she said.
Chokos said the event will also offer music from a DJ and a number of door prizes. No one younger than 21 will be admitted due to the alcohol.
She added that while tickets will be available at the door, those planning to attend are asked to order them by Tuesday so vendors can have an accurate count.
Chokos wanted to model the festival after one she has attended several times. “Savannah just had its 12thfood and wine festival,” she said. “They’re always very fun.”
She hopes to establish the Cumming Food & Wine Festival as a yearly affair.
“It’s such a neat event because it’s unusual in that people can come in for one price and get to sample numerous types of food and wine,” she said.
