Forsyth’s three “singin’, swingin’ grandmas” return to the Cumming Playhouse this week with all new music and choreography.

The Mood Swingers will perform a variety of music from the 1950s through ’70s, Disney songs and Broadway show tunes.

“They’ve been working to create a really exciting show this year with different songs, choreography and we expect it to be a sellout,” said Linda Heard, playhouse director. “It’s a very exciting show.

“There are lots of pretty costumes and exciting music, and there’s also a Disney segment, so it’s good for the children.”

The show, which opens Friday, runs on weekends through Nov. 15.

The Mood Swingers is made up of Kathy Russell, Cheryl Rogers and Pat Groman. Russell’s husband, Bob, is the group’s director.

Each “grandma” brings a unique tone to the trio, from Russell’s alto voice to Rogers’ classic soprano. The three-part harmonies are a trademark of the group, complete with Groman’s folk music vocal quality.

The show, which is nearly two hours with an intermission, is divided into segments based on feedback from their previous two years, Bob Russell said.

“We’re trying to reach the public’s many tastes,” he said. “We try to present music that they like ... I feel that we have found the recipe for the music that our community likes best because we’ve had a lot of input from them.”

Russell, who also is the musical director for the Sounds of Sawnee concert band and the Georgia Senior Follies, said his favorite segment is the finale, a 20-minute tribute to the Broadway show “Mama Mia.”

Two guest acts also will grace the stage.

Ms. Senior Georgia and former Forsyth County Commissioner Linda Ledbetter will show off her vocal talents along with Those Two Guys from the Georgia Senior Follies, who will highlight the country-western portion of the show, Russell said.

Due to it’s popularity, the Mood Swingers will give six performances, double last year’s run.

“It gives us a chance to reach more people,” Russell said. “We’ve been rehearsing every single day for the last three weeks, four to five hours a day. It’s brutal, but it’s a labor of love.

“We are very excited.”
