EAST FORSYTH — As part of National Hunting & Fishing Day, there will be a free kids fishing event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Lower Pool Park below Buford Dam.

According to the state Department of Natural Resources, the Buford Trout Hatchery will stock more than 2,500 Rainbow Trout at the dam that morning.

The event is open to all children ages 15 and younger, though they must be accompanied by an adult.

No fishing experience is required, and bait will be provided, but life jackets are recommended.

A limited number of fishing poles will be available as loaner poles, according to the DNR. Volunteers will be available to help with baiting hooks and removing fish.

There also will be fly tying and fishing demonstrations and free food, including hot dogs, drinks and snacks.

The annual event is organized by the DNR and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, along with the Cumming Kiwanis Club, Forsyth-Cumming Optimist Club, Upper Chattahoochee Chapter Trout Unlimited and National Wild Turkey Federation, among others.

The park is about 5 miles east on Buford Dam Road from Market Place Boulevard in Cumming. Travel past West Bank Park and take your last right before the dam.

Follow the road slowly under the power lines and down the hill to Lower Pool Park.
