A race on Saturday will mark the end of the third season for a growing children’s running program.
Nearly 80 kids enrolled in the eight-week spring session of Gotta Run Kids are scheduled to race with the community in the Gotta Give Back 5K.
Program coach Greg Patterson said he expects about 100 kids and about 150 adults to take part in the inaugural 5K fundraiser for local causes.
“This is going to be a race where we will see many parents running with their kids and many will be trying running for the first time,” Patterson said. “It is going to be great to see family units doing something healthy together.”
Patterson launched the Redeemer Runners last year as a program to encourage children in third through eighth grades to give running a try or reach new goals.
Interest has boomed, leading to the creation of the nonprofit Gotta Run Kids, which will expand the program to other area locations.
The Saturday 5K will also teach youth about the importance of giving back by donating to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and Piney Grove Middle School’s annual Grizzly Great Day of Giving, or G3 Day.
The annual day of service at Piney Grove took place earlier this month, sending students, teachers and families out into the community for volunteer work.
“A portion of the proceeds from this race will go toward next year’s event,” Patterson said. “It is a pricey business getting a whole school into the community to help out, but we think it is worth every penny.”
The race will be chip timed and is a USA Track & Field Certified course, he said.
A free 1-mile fun run will also take place for children 10 and younger.
