Parents and kids will be encouraged to get moving and share healthy habits during an event Saturday.
The Forsyth County Family YMCA will open its doors to all Forsyth families from 9 a.m. to noon as part of YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day.
According to a news release from the local YMCA, the free event will be celebrated at nearly 1,600 YMCA facilities across the country. More than 700,000 families nationwide are expected to attend.
Locally, the event will offer activities such as sports stations, live cooking demonstrations, and arts and crafts.
The Forsyth Y has held the event every year since 2006, when the facility opened at 5920 Post Road.
Kevin Thompson, executive director of the Forsyth facility, pointed to statistics showing that one in three U.S. children is overweight or obese.
“As a leading nonprofit strengthening community through healthy living, the Y holds Healthy Kids Day to teach healthy habits to kids and inspire a lifetime love of physical activity,” he said in a statement.
“We know parents struggle to find the time to incorporate more active play and healthier habits into their kids’ daily routine. Doing so doesn’t have to require extra money or resources.”
Thompson said what is most important is just setting play dates with children that incorporate being active and having fun.
