Children with disabilities and their families are invited to take to the water this weekend.

The Georgia chapter of Heart of Sailing, a national nonprofit that introduces sailing to disabled children and adults, will host its first Halloween Sail-a-Long and Resource Fair from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Bald Ridge Marina.

Families of special needs children can take part in one-hour sails on Lake Lanier beginning every half hour.

In addition, they can take advantage of the resource fair, that will feature several local organizations that provide services to children with autism, Down syndrome and other special needs.

Bill Schindler, chapter director, said the event has already experienced more success than expected.

“We figured maybe 30 or 40 families would come, and we’ve already got about 300 families registered,” he said.

“The experience [of sailing] for these kids is unbelievable.”

Schindler said the event will also offer trick-or-treating, although due to dietary limitations of many special needs children, no candy will be given out.

“But we’ll have little things, like little stickers and stuff, to hand out to them,” he said.

Children are also invited to wear Halloween costumes if they like, but costumes are not required.

Schindler said there’s still plenty of room for more families to partake in the day.

“This is going to be a great family event,” he said. “A lot of these families can’t go out to normal places a lot of times, so this is something that can be really special for them.”
