A retired U.S. Army senior non-commissioned officer has been named the 2013 member of the year for the Cumming-based Chapter 1030 of the Vietnam Veterans of America.

In singling-out former Command Sgt. Maj. Allen Russell, Chapter President Billy Darby noted that Russell “works tirelessly on behalf of this organization and the veterans of Forsyth County and is most deserving of this honor.”

Russell served in the Army for 30 years, including two tours of duty in Vietnam. He lives in Cumming with his wife, Becky.

The chapter also used the final meeting of the year to recognize two businesses for their support of military veterans.

Ingram Funeral Home of Cumming and SCCY Industries, a firearms manufacturer with offices in Acworth, received distinguished service awards.
