One local church plans to celebrate the approaching end of summer by holding a special worship service on Lake Lanier.

The River United Methodist Church will meet Aug. 2 at YMCA’s Camp Eagle Point. A potluck lunch follows, as well as a dip in the lake.

“It’s the first time we’ve done a lakeside service,” said Pastor Nancy Johnson. “We thought it would be a nice way to end the summer and a nice way to worship.”

While summer doesn’t officially end until Sept. 22, the school year starts Aug. 10.

Johnson said the service will include a Biblical message, singing of hymns and a “reaffirmation of baptism.” She added that the event is open to all.

Johnson said it’s a fitting location for a church service.

“It’s really beautiful there,” she said. “They have some lovely facilities.”

YMCA Camp Eagle Point is at 2210 Turner Road in Cumming.

Another local church holds lakeside services at Bald Ridge Marina Chapel at 9 a.m. every Sunday until Labor Day weekend.

Cumming First United Methodist Church plays host to a 30-minute worship and prayer session.

The service draws about 400 people on a sunny day, according to the Rev. John Cromartie.
