County begins process to extend four overlays
Forsyth County

Now that there is a plan for the expansion of Canton Highway (Hwy. 20 west), Forsyth County is planning to extend some overlay districts.

At a work session Tuesday, commissioners voted 4-0, with the District 2 seat vacant, to begin the public hearing process to extend four overlays.

“Since we know finally after 30 years where Hwy. 20 is going to be … I like to see it because we did stop the Bethelview one at Kelly Mill, I think,” said District 1 Commissioner Pete Amos.

If approved, the new overlays will bring the Buford Highway Overlay District to the Cherokee County line, the Peachtree Parkway-Bethelview Road Overlay District to Hwy. 20, the Atlanta Highway-McFarland Parkway-Mullinax Road Overlay District to the city of Cumming and the Campground-Castleberry-Kelly Mill-Pittman-Post-Shiloh Road Overlay District to District 1.

“This is really a very narrow scope,” said Director of Planning and Community Development Tom Brown. “We’re not looking to re-create the overlays.”

The county has about a half dozen overlays that allow certain geographical areas to have different development centers.

The matter will go to the county’s planning board for a recommendation before coming back to commissioners.
