County has plans for parks, green space

The following is a breakdown of Forsyth County's plans for parks, recreation and green space and the sources of funding. Unless otherwise noted, work on projects has yet to begin.

Green space properties
What: Property for the protection of water quality and supply; conservation of natural areas, lakes, rivers and forests; existing green space and park areas suitable for passive recreational use.
How: Law firm is helping county staff and the commission evaluate and acquire $36 million in green space.
Spent so far: $8.9 million for 186-acre Wallace Tatum tract in northwestern Forsyth; $8.5 million on 63-acre Harrison property in south Forsyth; and $5.1 million on 43-acre Buice property, also in south Forsyth.
Pending: $5 million for the 100-acre McClure property
Remaining: $8.5 million


Fowler Park
What: Soccer, football, softball and baseball fields; open area for special events; teen play area with skate park; tennis center, walking trails, playground, concession and restroom buildings; office building, maintenance shop and dog park.
How much: $19 million -- $18 million from bonds and $1 million from impact fees


Northwest Community Park (part of Wallace Tatum tract)
What: Active park to include athletic fields, concession and restroom buildings and playground.
How much: $4 million from bonds

South Recreation Center
What: Fowler Park - Building to include indoor track, two gym floors, classrooms, office area, restrooms, fitness/weight room and showers
How much: $6.5 million -- $2.6 million from bonds and $3.9 million from impact fees

North Community Park
What: Purchase of land for an active park in northeast Forsyth.
How much: $4 million from bonds


Bennett Park
What: Maintenance shop; fence around it for equipment; security poles and lights for parking areas; tear down old concession stand and replace with new one and restroom; landscaping; soil and erosion control; planning and design fees.
How much: $1 million -- $230,000 from bonds and $770,000 from 1-cent sales tax

Additional projects
What: Three artificial turf fields are being installed at Sharon Springs, Midway and Bennett parks. Installation is under way.
How much: $1.4 million from bonds


Sharon Springs Park
What: Park improvements including press box; new fence for upper field; concrete plaza; shade structure over playground and lower complex pavilion; design fees.
How much: $630,000 -- $300,000 from bonds and $330,000 from 1-cent sales tax


Central Park
What: Entrance sign; lights for part of walking trail; covers over dugouts; landscape irrigation; light batting cages; new scoreboards; add pavilion for storage; lightning protection to buildings; design fees.
How much: $300,000 from bonds


Midway Park
What: Community building with meeting room, kitchen area and indoor and outdoor restrooms; football press box; dugout covers; concrete plaza; repair road; design fees.
How much: $520,000 -- $300,000 from bonds and $220,000 from 1-cent sales tax


Coal Mountain Park
What: Community building with meeting room and kitchen; storage building; repave walking trail around upper complex.
How much: $200,000 from bonds


Windermere Park
What: Walking path; nature trails; playground; picnic pavilion; dog park; open grass field.
How much: $20,000 from bonds


Etowah Blueway
What: Develop canoe launching area, trails, pavilions and parking area.
How much: $1 million from bonds


Sawnee Mountain Preserve phase III
What: Parking, trails, restrooms and pavilion; restore Round House for small groups and the public to visit.
How much: $3.5 million -- $1.8 million from bonds and $1.7 million from 1-cent sales tax


Joint venture with the school system
What: Build athletic fields at Chestatee Elementary and Liberty Middle schools.
How much: $7.9 million from bonds


Aquatic Center
What: Indoor competition pool with outside play pool and splash structures for city-county facility.
How much: $10 million from bonds, which was given to the city of Cumming in December.


Big Creek Greenway
What: Construction of a 10-foot wide walking/bike path along the Big Creek Greenway. Phase II is from Hwy. 9 to Majors Road. Phase III is from Majors Road to Bethelview Road.
How much: $11.4 million -- $8 million from bonds and $3.4 million from impact fees


Lake Lanier park improvements
Shady Grove Campground: Renovate and add water and electricity to campsites; stabilize the shoreline; add a maintenance shelter
Young Deer Creek Park: Renovate beaches at campground
Charleston Park: Build pavilion
How much: $2.2 million: $1.1 million from bonds and $1.1 million from 1-cent sales tax
