Forsyth County's planning director has been placed on paid administrative leave.

According to a county memo, the investigation into Jeff Chance pertains to "e-mail correspondence."

The leave, which began Wednesday, will initially last for up to 10 working days.

County Manager Doug Derrer said Friday he couldn't comment on any specifics since the investigation is in its early stages.

"We're looking into some questionable management decisions," Derrer said.

Derrer anticipated the investigation would come to a close within 30 days.

He said Tom Brown, assistant planning director, will fill in for Chance during his absence.

Chance, 44, has worked for the county since June 26, 1995, and has an annual salary of $92,104.

The planning director has been arrested twice in recent years on alcohol-related traffic charges.

In November 2007, Chance pleaded no contest to a reduced charge of reckless driving in connection with a May 2007 incident.

In February, he pleaded guilty to drunk driving, a charge that stemmed from an April 2008 arrest.

Chance did not face any action by the county for either of those charges.

County officials have previously said disciplinary action could not be taken against employees for incidents that occur on personal time in their own vehicles.

The type of job the employee has is taken into consideration.
