Cumming leaders have approved the city's budget for 2011.

After voting in December to delay the vote one month to Tuesday's regular monthly meeting, the mayor and council voted unanimously to approve the $23.1 million budget.

Mayor H. Ford Gravitt said the budget includes $9.31 million in the general fund and a water and sewer budget of $12.8 million.

Some department allotments include: nearly $1.4 million for streets; $1.3 million for parks and recreation; $1.1 million for the fairgrounds; and $333,550 for the Cumming Playhouse.

Gravitt said the total budget reflects a drop of about 30 percent over what it was two years ago.

"We're still holding a lean budget," he said. "Money is just not there like it was and we believe in holding a tight ship."

Gravitt said the council would likely revisit the budget to potentially make some midyear adjustments.

Also Tuesday, the council voted unanimously to rehire all municipal workers for 2011.

"We just can't say enough about our employees," Gravitt said. "In all types of weather, they're out there working and they all do a great job."

All city board members were also reappointed for 2011. Among the panels: planning and zoning; parks and recreation; and housing authority.

"They've all agreed to serve again and all of them served well, so I recommend we bring them all back this year," Gravitt said.
