FORSYTH COUNTY — For the first time in more than a quarter century, the Forsyth County Civil Service Board met without Avery Howell as a member.

Howell, a retired dentist, resigned from his position earlier this year due to health problems. Thursday was the panel’s first meeting since then.

“He was on the Civil Service Board for 27 years, and of that I think he had served as chairman of the board for probably 15 or more of those years,” said Charity Clark, clerk for the panel. “He had also served on the tax equalization board from 1992 to 2014, so he’s just been an upstanding member of the community.”

Howell joined the civil service board in October 1988. He was reappointed to a four-year term in late 2012.

His replacement was approved by the county commission in January.

“Jerry Bowman, his appointment, [will fill] the unexpired term,” Clark said.

She added that both the board and commission would be honoring Howell later this month or in March.
