Homestead exemption deadline is April 2

The deadline to apply for homestead exemptions for 2018 is Monday, April 2.

The exemption can be applied for at the Forsyth County Tax Assessor’s Office, located on the second level of the Forsyth County Administration Building, 8:30 a.m. through 5 p.m. on weekdays.

Though the exemptions can be applied for all year, homeowners will not receive it this year if they do not apply before the deadline.

Homestead exemptions can reduce the amount of property tax paid and are automatically renewed each year unless requirements are not met.

Property owners are only allowed to apply for the exemption for one property, and married couples can only receive one exemption even if different properties are in each spouses’  name.

The exemption is subtracted from 40 percent of the “assessed value of the property in the applicable tax categories.”
