Two recreation centers under construction in south Forsyth are on track to open in February.

One of the centers is being built at Fowler Park, near Hwy. 9 and Castleberry Road.

The other is going up at the future Old Atlanta Park, on property at Nichols and Old Atlanta roads.

The county bought that site with funding from the 2008 voter-approved $100 million bond for parks, recreation and green space.

Each recreation center will be about 42,000 square feet and feature two gymnasiums, a walking track, exercise rooms and office space.

Jerry Kinsey, director of parks and recreation, updated the parks board on the construction progress during a meeting Tuesday night.

Board members said they appreciated being able to watch the centers’ progress through e-mailed photos.

The $9.9-million contract to build both centers is being handled by Winter Construction.

The funding came from the parks and green space bond and impact fees, which are charged to developers.

The county currently has one recreation center, which is at Central Park on Keith Bridge Road in north Forsyth.
