The Forsyth County Fire Department is participating this week in an annual event to improve safety.

The 2010 Fire/EMS Safety, Health and Survival Week began Sunday and lasts until Saturday.

The event, also known as Safety Week, is sponsored by the International Association of Fire Chiefs and the International Association of Fire Fighters. This year’s theme is “Fit for Duty.”

Departments in the United States and Canada are taking part.

“One of the fire department’s primary goals is to promote the health and safety of our employees,” said Forsyth Fire Chief Danny Bowman.

“We understand that a safe and healthy staff is better able to provide aid to the citizens when we are called upon for assistance.”

According to information published on the International Association of Fire Chiefs’ Web site, participating agencies will focus on topics including food and nutrition, fitness, stress management, infectious diseases and smoking and smokeless tobacco cessation.

Fire Capt. Jason Shivers said firefighters will train on objectives outlined by the international associations without affecting local emergency response.

“Citizens’ requests for assistance will certainly remain job number one,” Shivers said.
