GAINESVILLE — Work to repair the Dawsonville Highway (Hwy. 53) westbound bridge over the Chattahoochee River portion of Lake Lanier is nearing completion, with all major work scheduled to be finished possibly as early as this weekend.

Georgia Department of Transportation spokesman Mohamed Arafa said the agency will be placing one more layer of polymer on the bridge deck “to provide an even smoother ride to all motorists.”

That work, the final major item on the project, is set for this weekend, weather permitting. If weather delays the work, it will be completed next weekend.

The left lane of the bridge will close at 8 p.m. Friday to allow the additional layer of polymer to be added.

Once the left lane work is complete, the right lane will be closed so it can also get the additional polymer.

Striping of the bridge and a final review of the work will then be all that remain on the project, set for a June 30 completion. Those items shouldn’t interfere with traffic.

The nearly $3 million project includes a new driving surface, installation of bridge joints, painting the bridge and other work. It began in October.

The bridge, built in 1956, was previously resurfaced in 1992.
