A 51-year-old Alto man died Friday morning after authorities say he suffered an apparent heart attack while driving and crashed into a bridge that joins Forsyth and Hall counties at Lake Lanier.

According to Forsyth County Sheriff’s Cpl. David Garrison, the incident occurred about 10:12 a.m. as Ralph Phillip Jones was traveling west on Browns Bridge Road/Hwy. 369.

Jones lost control of the 1999 Lincoln Navigator as he was entering Forsyth County and it struck the bridge.

Emergency personnel took Jones to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, where he was pronounced dead about 11:21 a.m.

Garrison said Jones was wearing his seat belt and drugs and alcohol are not believed to have been factors in the crash.

The investigation is continuing.
