A house fire late last week that resulted in the death of a 37-year-old man remains under investigation, officials said.

Forsyth County Fire Capt. Jason Shivers said the man, who has been identified as Michael Smith, became trapped inside the house on Kennemore Drive off Union Hill Road late Friday night.

“He was rescued by firefighters, but unfortunately suffered life-ending injuries and passed away at North Fulton Hospital,” Shivers said, noting Smith died shortly after being transported to the hospital.

No other injuries were reported in connection with the blaze.

Shivers said Smith was pulled from an upstairs bedroom. His wife, who was also home at the time, escaped on her own. Shivers was not sure if anyone else had been inside the home prior to the blaze.

The cause and origin of the fire remain “under a very thorough investigation,” Shivers said, adding that the Forsyth County Sheriff’s criminal investigation division is also working on the case.

Smith suffered severe burns all over his body, Forsyth County Coroner Lauren McDonald said. The cause of death is still under investigation.
