In the end, Erwin Cruz’s chow-chow was beaten out by Olive Affairs’ Gourmet olive tapenade.

The Forsyth County resident was one of three finalists in his category in the University of Georgia Flavor of Georgia competition.

The annual event seeks out the best Georgia vendors in several categories, including dairy products, confections, meats and Cruz’s category of jams, jellies and sauces.

His Annie Lee’s Gourmet Chow-Chow Relish, a recipe from his grandmother, placed second.

Judges included Gov. Sonny Perdue and Jamie and Bobby Deen, more commonly known as the Deen Brothers, the sons of TV personality Paula Deen.
