BUFORD — The body of a Duluth woman who disappeared in Lake Lanier on Labor Day was found Thursday morning.

Mark McKinnon, spokesman for the Department of Natural Resources, said Christine Earwood, 49, was found about 9:15 a.m. “by some patrons at Holiday Marina. They saw the body floating and called 911.”

Hall County Sheriff’s Office and DNR rangers were sent to the scene.

“We got there very quickly in our boats, and the divers were able to go in the water and recover her very quickly,” McKinnon said.

McKinnon said she was pronounced dead by the coroner.

Authorities were first notified of the woman’s disappearance Monday night, following a report in the Big Creek Park area of a woman jumping off a boat and never resurfacing.

Using side-scan sonar, sector-scan sonar and a remotely operated underwater vehicle, DNR searched the past two days for Earwood.

Due to the approaching heavy rain Wednesday night, the search was suspended early, McKinnon said.
