A few people gathered Thursday night in downtown Cumming as part of the nationwide Occupy movement.

The group met at the corner of Castleberry Road and Maple Avenue.

Participants held up signs airing grievances with the current state of affairs in the United States as traffic passed.

“We wanted to be a part of the national movement and let them know that we show our solidarity,” said Sharon Gunter, chairwoman of the Forsyth County Democratic Party.

The Occupy movement, aimed at economic and social inequality, began in the United States on Sept. 17.

By October, the protests had spread from New York City and San Francisco to several other cities across the country, including Atlanta.

Gunter said the rally Thursday night was to raise awareness of the movement’s mission calling for Congressional term limits, the end of Bush tax cuts, higher employment wages and lobbyist reform.

She noted that Forsyth County is not immune to economic turmoil.

“Not everybody is affluent in this county, and what is happening to the least of us is just a heartbeat away from the rest of us,” Gunter said.
