A stretch of Atlanta Highway (Hwy. 9) southwest of Cumming was closed after a fatal wreck Tuesday morning.

CUMMING — A 59-year-old woman was killed in a two-vehicle crash Tuesday that shut down a stretch of Atlanta Highway (Hwy. 9) for about 90 minutes during the morning commute.

The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office identified the woman as Marianella Sanchez of Cumming.

The fatal collision occurred about 7:10 a.m. on Hwy. 9 near Valley Circle Road, southwest of Cumming.

The Honda Accord Sanchez was driving reportedly collided head on with an F-150 pickup in an area known as “sawmill curve,” between the north and south entrances of Valley Circle.

The driver of the pickup, who reportedly suffered minor injuries, was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

That section of Hwy. 9 was closed in both directions while the wreck was investigated and DOT crews spread sand over oil that had leaked after the crash. The road was closed for about an hour and a half.

Sheriff’s Cpl. Robin Regan said initial indications are that drugs or alcohol were not involved, though the crash remains under investigation.
