GAINESVILLE — Gainesville police and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources are investigating the reported drowning in Lake Lanier.

“Just before 10 p.m. [Thursday] night, emergency personnel were called to the docks at the Chattahoochee Country Club for a reported drowning,” said police spokesman Cpl. Kevin Holbrook.

Gainesville police units were the first on the scene, he said.

“Officers immediately began giving life-saving procedures to the victim, and shortly after that emergency medical personnel arrived,” Holbrook said.

The victim has been identified as 51-year-old William James Carswell of Gainesville. He was pronounced dead at Northeast Georgia Medical Center early Friday morning.

Holbrook said the police were the lead agency on the investigation, although the DNR typically investigates lake incidents.

“At this time, the investigation is still ongoing,” Holbrook said.

“Investigators are looking at all aspects of the case to determine the time line, cause and manner of death. We are currently investigating it as a drowning.”
