The stretch of Hwy. 20 that passes over Ga. 400 will be named the Judge Richard S. Gault Memorial Interchange during a ceremony Wednesday.

Gault’s widow, Paula, said the family couldn’t be more excited.

“We’re very pleased that the children especially will have an opportunity to see how well respected their grand Stan was in the community,” she said. “It’s just very touching. It’s bittersweet. It’s been six years. It’s hard to believe, but this is just a very nice remembrance.”

The Superior Court judge, who passed away in 2003, served for 14 years in the Blue Ridge Circuit. He was instrumental in the 1998 formation of the Bell-Forsyth Judicial Circuit.

It was his role in creating a local circuit, which led District 23 state Rep. Mark Hamilton to author the legislation dedicating the road in Gault’s honor.

“Judge Gault touched many lives throughout our community and I think that will be evident by the many people honoring his life and contributions at the ceremony,” Hamilton said. “As our wonderful community continues to grow, it is important to remember the many different people that helped shape it.”

Gault’s daughters and grandchildren will attend the ceremony, which is set for 8:30 a.m. at the Forsyth County Courthouse.

Road signs, which cost about $1,500, were paid for through donations from various local Rotary clubs and the Forsyth County Bar Association, Paula Gault said.

“He was always looking out for what was best for the citizens of Forsyth, and it’s nice that people can remember that,” she said.
