CUMMING — Law enforcement personnel often receive thanks for helping motorists with flat tires and over-heated vehicles, but one Forsyth County Sheriff’s deputy put in some extra roadside assistance Tuesday when he helped deliver a baby.

Deputy Matt Pittman was nearby when a 911 call came in about 2:15 a.m. for a woman in labor on the Hwy. 20 (Buford Highway) ramp at Ga. 400, according to the sheriff’s office.

The fast-approaching baby was crowning when Pittman arrived, according to Epifanio Rodriguez, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office.

Pittman and the soon-to-be father delivered a safe and healthy baby girl as they were walked through the process by the 911 dispatcher.

“Our dispatchers have guides for calls that may come through,” Rodriguez said. “So if a call comes in that a woman is in labor, they have something to read to walk them through each step.”

The husband had reportedly been driving them south from Dawsonville to a hospital in Atlanta.

It was not immediately clear whether the newborn and mother — who was also safe and healthy after the emergency delivery — were taken to nearby Northside Hospital-Forsyth or Atlanta.

Pittman has been with the sheriff’s office only since January, Rodriguez said. And though he had never been through anything like that before, the deputy was “very excited.”
