CUMMING — If the weather cooperates, work to begin widening Ga. 400 through much of Forsyth County will begin Monday.

The announcement came Wednesday as local and state officials gathered for a groundbreaking ceremony at the ride-share lot off Exit 14 in Cumming.

According to a news release from the state Department of Transportation, crews will first repair the damaged concrete driving surface on the existing lanes of the corridor.

Construction of one additional lane in each direction from McFarland Parkway, near the north Fulton line, to Hwy. 369 in north Forsyth likely will begin in the spring.

The new Ga. 400-Hwy. 369 interchange will become Exit 18.

Also as part of the project, bridges over the Big Creek and Sawnee Creek portions of Lake Lanier will be widened and the existing lanes repaired.

The 13.4-mile, $47.4 million project is scheduled to be finished by May 31, 2018. C.W. Matthews Contracting is handling the work.

The project represents a partnership between Forsyth County and the DOT.

The department has contributed $13 million and is managing the project.

The remainder of the project funding, about $34.5 million, will come from the transportation bond program Forsyth voters approved in November 2014.

As with many road improvement projects, traffic may get worse before it gets better.

The work on Ga. 400 will require lane closures, which according to the DOT will occur overnight or on weekends.

Weekday overnight work hours for the northbound lanes will be 9 p.m. to noon.

Weekday southbound work hours are 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Weekend work hours for northbound lane closures is 9 p.m. Fridays around the clock to noon Mondays.

Weekend work hours for southbound lane closures is 7 p.m. Fridays to 5 a.m. Mondays.
