I find it a total lack of responsibility on the part of the coroner to leave the keys to a county vehicle in the vehicle that was stolen.
While it is not his fault that someone stole the vehicle, it is certainly his fault that he did not use common sense to protect a county asset. His excuse that he needed to leave the keys in the car so his assistant could take it when needed is silly. Wouldn’t a $2 extra set of keys given to the assistant have been fiscally responsible and smarter?
It will be interesting to see if the insurance company covers the theft when they find out the keys were in the vehicle. It probably won’t make the news, and then we will have to cover the cost of the vehicle. This is another instance of politicians taking for granted their responsiblity and our tax dollars.

Editor’s note: The stolen coroner’s vehicle was recovered undamaged and is back in use.
