Former Lambert baseball standout Seth Beer headlines a list of 55 high school and college players named to the preseason Golden Spikes Award watch list Wednesday, the award for the top amateur baseball player in the country by USA Baseball that will be announced June 29.
The Clemson sophomore was named one of four finalists for the award last year after a remarkable freshman season in which he batted .369 with 18 home runs, 70 RBIs to lead the Tigers to its first ACC championship in 10 years. Mercer outfielder Kyle Lewis eventually won the prestigious award.
Beer was the first freshman to be named ACC player of the year and was later named winner of the Dick Howser Trophy as college baseball’s player of the year from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
Beer and the Tigers open their season Friday at home against Wright State.
