Lambert girls upset Pope in Class AAAAAA first round

MARIETTA – Ashley Johnson had 16 points and 11 rebounds as the Lambert Lady Longhorns upset Region 5-AAAAAA champion Pope, 54-36, on Wednesday in the first round of the Class AAAAAA tournament.

Lambert (16-13) advanced to play Harrison, a 58-55 winner over Langston Hughes, on Friday.

Leah Cote added 12 points for the Lady Longhorns. M.E. Craven had 10 points as she went 8-for-11 from the free-throw line. Molly Williams added 10 points while Alex Russell grabbed 13 rebounds.

“Complete team win,” Lambert coach Jaime Fisher said.

“We just didn't have it tonight" said Pope coach Courtney Harris. "We weren't hitting any shots, our effort level was a little bit low, and we just struggled overall."

The struggles were evident early, as Lambert capitalized on Pope turnovers and took a 17-10 lead to end the first quarter. The Lady Greyhounds went on a 7-0 run in the middle of the second period, but Lambert regained an 8-point margin going into the halftime break, leading 28-20.

Pope was in foul trouble early and often during the game, and Lambert made them pay; converting 20-of-27 free throws.

Pope's Kierra Henry led her team with 14 points, putting the finishing touches on a career that exceeded 2,000 points.
