Pinecrest Academy at Bowdon

When, where: Friday, 7:30 p.m., at Warren P. Sewell Field in Bowdon.

Records, rankings: Pinecrest is 6-3 overall, 5-2 in Region 6-1A, Div. B and unranked in Class 1A; Bowdon is 6-3, 4-2 and unranked.

Series record: First meeting.

What to know: The Paladins will have a long way to travel for their region crossover game. They’ll head down GA-400, across I-285 and westward on I-20 until they flirt with the Alabama state line. If anything, big road trips prep teams for the postseason anyway, right?

The Paladins have to feel good about their chances. While both teams are 6-3, Bowdon hasn’t played nearly as tough of a schedule in Region 6-A, Div. A. Bowdon’s recent win was an actually underwhelming 20-6 effort against hapless North Cobb Christian—that followed a 24-12 loss to Mount Zion-Carroll. The Red Devils are known for putting up points against inferior opponents—they have games of 57, 37, 31 and 43 points scored on the year. But, Pinecrest is boasting a defense that hasn’t allowed a point in two weeks and has earned three total shutouts on the season.

This game will prepare both teams for a postseason environment, but won’t affect the postseason. Bowdon is well within the Class A-Public playoff power rating cutoff, while Pinecrest enters ranked No. 11. The Paladins would have to fall all the way past No. 24 in one game—an impossible scenario considering the current No. 24 team is Walker at 3-6.
