What to know: This will not be a typical Homecoming walk-over game for Pinecrest. St. Francis is rated No. 12 in the GHSA Class A Private power ratings—the system that decides which 16 teams qualify for the state playoffs. Pinecrest is rated No. 6. St. Francis handled the two teams’ common opponent, Walker, by three touchdowns. Just minutes after Friday’s win over Whitefield Academy, Paladins coach Todd Winter had already turned his attention to St. Francis, knowing Pinecrest cannot afford any slip-ups at home. After Mitchell Ojeda’s first quarter pick-six, Friday’s result was never really in doubt.
St. Francis is coming off a 39-20 road loss to Class A-Private No. 5 Mt. Pisgah; the Knights trailed just 16-14 at halftime and 23-14 in to the fourth quarter. St. Francis committed four turnovers, gained just 155 yards and had a punt blocked in the end zone for a safety. The Knights do not have to face Mt. Paran—they drew Mt. Zion (Carroll) as a division crossover opponent and won 21-0—meaning Friday’s trip to Pinecrest could have big implications on what team has to play in a Region 6-A play-in game on Nov. 7.
