Trion at Pinecrest Academy

When, where: Friday, 7:30 p.m., at Pinecrest Academy in Cumming.

Records, rankings: Trion is 3-0 overall, 0-0 in Region 6-A, Div. A and unranked in Class A; Pinecrest is 2-0, 0-0 and unranked.

Series history: Trion leads 2-1.

Last meeting: Pinecrest won 21-14 in 2014.

What to know: Though neither team is ranked by the Georgia Sports Writers Association, both are in good spots in the Georgia High School Association Power Ratings for Class A Football. Pinecrest in No. 2 among private schools while Trion is No. 2 among public schools. The top 16 at the end of the regular season advance to the state playoffs.

Pinecrest is coming off a 34-12 win at Walker in which Paladins quarterback Ryan McCarthy shined, but not how you might expect. He was potent on offense, as usual, rushing for 102 yards and two touchdowns on five carries while completing 5 of 8 passes for 53 yards. But McCarthy also had 13 tackles on defense and two interceptions, both of which he returned for touchdowns. The Paladins’ defense has been strong so far, but it’ll be tested these next two weeks with Trion on Friday and defending Class A private school champion Mount Paran next week.
