Pinecrest basketball sweeps Athens Academy

Pinecrest Academy girls basketball defeated Athens Academy on Saturday, 47-34, giving the Lady Paladins two wins in their last four games. Pinecrest (3-17, 3-6) had previously lost nine straight.

The Lady Paladins were led by freshman Margaret Metz, who scored a team-high 15 points. Senior captain Amanda Boyd added 12 points, and junior Bailey Evans had eight. Boyd and Metz also hauled in 10 and five rebounds, respectively.

The first half ended with Athens Christian up by four, but a 26-9 run by Pinecrest in the second half gave the Lady Paladins a decisive victory.

Pinecrest Academy boys 81, Athens Academy 66: A strong first half led the Paladins over Athens Christian on Saturday, ending a four-game losing streak for the Paladins.

Pinecrest (6-14, 5-5) closed the second quarter up by 13 and would hold on for the team’s first win at home all season. Athens Christian (9-9) fell to .500 on the year.


Junior Nick Palmer had one of the best games of his career as a Paladin, scoring 27 points. Athens Christian junior Eric Williams racked up 36, but he didn’t have much support. No other Spartan reached double digit points.


In addition to Palmer, senior Michael Bruckner had a good night, scoring 11. Zayne Rice and Ryan McCarthy had 14 and 12 rebounds, respectively, helping Pinecrest out-rebound Athens Christian 46-33.
