The South Forsyth Boys golf team won its first invitational of the season at the Coal Mountain Invitational on Saturday.

The field featured mostly local high schools from Forsyth and surrounding counties. The tournament was a Stableford or Points system format.

The War Eagles totaled 101 points to claim first place over North Forsyth. The War Eagles junior varsity team finished third ahead of varsity squads from White County, Dawson County, Forsyth Central and Pinecrest Academy.

Junior Nick Mineo led the War Eagles’ varsity team with 32 points. Senior Grant Young accounted for 26 points, freshman Cameron Stokes 22 points and senior Josh Payne and sophomore Ritvik Peesapati each had 21 points.

Josh Sargent led the junior varsity team with 26 points followed by Trevor Plink to help them total 85 total points.

“This is a real confidence-booster,” South coach Matt Loveless said. “We entered this season graduating five out of our starting six golfers from last season’s team who had gone to the state championship three out of the past four seasons.”
