Newton at West Forsyth
When, where: Tonight, 7 p.m., at West Forsyth High School in Cumming.
Records, rankings, seedings: Newton is 22-6, unranked in Class AAAAAA and the No. 2 seed from Region 2; West is 23-6, unranked and the No. 1 seed from Region 6.
What to know: After winning its first region title in school history, West Forsyth added to its list of milestones on Tuesday with a 65-51 win over Mill Creek in the first round of the Class AAAAAA state playoffs. Now the question is, how far can the Lady Wolverines go? The answer: until someone stops Jenna Staiti. The 6-foot-5 Maryland signee was unstoppable, per usual, with a 35-point performance in the first round. She’s been dominating in the low block, but has added even more pressure on opponents by shooting a high clip from beyond the arc. More importantly, guards Carsen Parker and Hayla Seitz have been solid defenders in meaningful games down the stretch, and the post-combination opposite of Staiti has been filled nicely by Kalie Schlegel and Brooke Pirkle.
Newton comes from a small region, where it finished runner-up to undefeated Tucker in the region tournament. The Lady Rams were scoring in the 60s through a four-game win streak that lasted into their league bracket, but had to win a defensive battle, 35-28, over Langston Hughes on Wednesday to advance to the round of 16 teams.
What’s next: The winner will face the Cherokee-Hillgrove winner in the state quarterfinals.
