Former West Forsyth football coach Frank Hepler is expected to be named the head coach at Discovery, the newest high school in Gwinnett County that’s slated to open in Lawrenceville later this year, according to multiple sources.
Hepler will be charged with starting the Titans’ program from scratch, a familiar situation for the coaching veteran.
It was Hepler who opened the program at West in 2007 and led it to impressive success. The Wolverines went 49-18 in six varsity seasons under Hepler. West never had a losing season and made four straight state playoff appearances, tying a Forsyth County record.
Hepler arrived at West after 13 seasons at Plantation High School, his alma mater in Florida, and when he resigned from West after the 2013 season, Hepler returned to the area, first taking a defensive coordinator position at Cypress Bay High School in Weston, Fla., before eventually becoming the head coach at Nova High School in Davie, Fla. Hepler led Nova to a 4-6 record this past season.
Discovery, which is being built to relieve Berker and Central Gwinnett high schools, is expected to join Region 8-AAAAA and play a non-region schedule in football for its inaugural season, according to the Gwinnett Daily Post.
