Like North Forsyth's Dakota Chalmers, West Forsyth catcher Chris Cullen was selected by the Oakland Athletics in Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. He came off the board Wednesday in the 38th round (1,148th overall pick).
He and Chalmers won’t be teammates any time soon.
Cullen, who had talent worthy of a selection in the top-10 rounds, admitted his late selection was because he had told every team that contacted him he was completely focused on his playing career at South Carolina.
“I’m definitely going to college,” Cullen said. “Still, getting drafted was an unforgettable experience for me. That’s something that I’ve dreamt about as a little kid, and it came true, probably not as soon as I wanted it to be but before the draft I let the teams know I was taking the college route.
“When I got the call I was just overwhelmed. To hear your name called by such a great organization, it’s definitely not something you can take for granted.”
