Jenna Staiti scores points by the bushel, grabs every rebound in sight, blocks shots, keeps the opponent’s best offensive player quiet — ho hum. These stories pretty much write themselves at this point.

Kelley Hartman, Sequoyah’s 6-foot-2 post player with Division-I interest from Furman and UAB, did all she could in the first quarter, pushing, pulling, holding, frustrating Staiti.

Hartman’s efforts drew Staiti’s attention, though, and the Lady Wolverines’ junior center went at Hartman time and time again, to the tune of 38 points and 10 rebounds, helping West to a 54-42 win and the Wolverine Winter Classic title on Tuesday night.

“Jenna’s the type of kid who likes a challenge,” West coach David May said. “[Hartman] is really good, and Jenna knew that. She stepped up and was great tonight.”

Staiti earned tournament MVP honors; guard Abby Quincy (four points) was named to the all-tournament team. Jane Ortlip (six points) hit two big three-pointers for West early in the third quarter to push a one-point halftime lead to seven, and Jasmine Rodriguez added six for the Lady Wolverines.

For Sequoyah, Hartman and guard Megan Garcia finished with 10 points apiece. Much like Monday night, the Lady Chiefs didn’t score much in the paint and couldn’t compensate with three-point shooting (3-for-16).

“Jenna essentially takes one player out of the game and makes the other four girls beat us,” May said.

Staiti and May wore their exasperation in plain sight in a chippy first half. Sequoyah played Hack-a-Staiti — and got away with it.

Then, she scored the final 11 West points of the second quarter and opened the second half with a three from the wing, holding her right arm aloft a few extra beats for good measure, and it was Sequoyah unsure of what, exactly, to try next.

West resumes Region 6 action on Saturday afternoon as Class AAAAAA No. 7 South Forsyth visits for a 4 p.m. intra-county showdown.
