CUMMING — Area veterans will be recognized and remembered at a ceremony this week.

Starting at 11 a.m. on Friday, locals will pay their respects to veterans during the city of Cumming’s annual Memorial Day Ceremony at the Veterans War Memorial at 301 Veterans Memorial Blvd.

“The city has done this for many years now,” said Crystal Ledford, a spokeswoman for the city. “It’s just a chance for the community to come together and honor all of our service men and women, especially those that are no longer with us.”

Georgia Army National Guard Lt. Col. Reed L. Berry — who commands the 3rd Battalion, 121st Infantry 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team station in Cumming — will deliver the ceremony’s keynote address.

The ceremony will include an invocation from the retired Army and current American Legion Post 307 chaplain, the Rev. Charles S. Weaver, a dove release and new additions to the city’s Avenue of Flags.

“One of the main highlights of the event every year is the Avenue of Flags dedication, which is where we add new flags ... that large display that flies every Friday prior to Memorial Day during our ceremony and every Friday prior to Veterans Day,” Ledford said.

“We have six new families that will get flags this year. Some of them have several different veterans on the flag, so more than six are being represented.”

Also participating will be the honor guards of the Forsyth County Fire Department and Sheriff’s Office, Georgia Pipe and Drums and the North Georgia Barbershop singers.
